Bertram P. and Lilian Holst Endowment
The Holst family was an influential and philanthropic presence in Boone, Iowa, whose dedication to community service left a lasting impact. Lillian Holst, an accomplished organist, played a pivotal role in the Augustinian Lutheran Church, both as the chairwoman of the committee for selecting a new organ and through her generous time and financial contributions. During World War II, she organized Red Cross volunteers at the Boone County Hospital, further demonstrating her commitment to her community.
In addition to her work in music and healthcare, Lillian was a key figure in the local garden scene. She founded the Boone Garden Club, spearheaded the planting of trees along South Story Street, and contributed funds for the fountain at Blair Park. Her passion for gardening eventually expanded into a deep knowledge of agriculture. The Holsts owned extensive land holdings through Holst Farms in and around Boone County, and Bert Holst was an avid supporter of agricultural research.
Bert Holst was also a successful businessman, operating the Holst Hotel in downtown Boone, which welcomed guests for many years. A lifelong supporter of the Boone County YMCA, Bert began contributing memberships to the Y for local boys as early as 1913. His strong ties to the Y were matched by his commitment to other local projects, including the restoration of the Manny Eisenhower home, for which Lillian served as chairwoman of the development committee.
The Holsts were also active in several local organizations, including the Boone Women’s Club, the Boone Lions Club, and the Boone Golf and Country Club. As world travelers, Bert and Lillian shared their experiences with friends and neighbors, while also cultivating a valuable collection of special edition books. Lillian, who was distantly related to Queen Mary of England, had a rich international network, having attended the wedding of the Maharaja of Pore and met Indira Gandhi.
Education was central to the Holsts’ lives. Lillian, a graduate of Carthage College, was a science teacher in Boone schools and served on the local school board. Bert, a 1913 graduate of Drake University, played on the football team during his college years. Both were passionate advocates for quality education, and their contributions to the Boone community reflected this value.
Through their philanthropic efforts, the Holsts demonstrated a lifelong dedication to education, community service, and the enrichment of Boone, Iowa. Their legacy continues to be honored at the DMACC Foundation through their scholarship where their contributions to higher education are a lasting tribute to their commitment to the community.
