Dr. Wayne Rouse Scholarship

This scholarship was created in honor of Wayne E. Rouse, MD, who was a prominent and long serving member of the DMACC Foundation Boone Committee who passed away on May 21, 2016. Wayne Earl Rouse was born on April 6, 1936, in Estherville, IA, the son of Lyle and Irma (Philpott) Rouse. He graduated from Terril High School in Terril in 1953. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa in 1957 and his MD degree from the University of Iowa in 1961. He took his internship in Saginaw, MI, from 1961 to 1962. On June 6, 1961, Wayne married Joyce Ervin in Iowa City. Wayne served with the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1964. Wayne was a family physician in Boone for 39 years, retiring August 1, 2001. He practiced medicine at the Boone Family Practice Clinic and the Boone County Hospital where he had also served as Chief of Staff. Wayne was an officer of the Boone County Medical Society. In earlier years, he was on the teaching staff at Broadlawn’s Hospital in Des Moines and was a member of the Board of Directors for the Iowa Division of the American Cancer Society from 1975 – 1986. Wayne was a long time member of the American Medical Association. He was an active member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians, serving on the Board of Directors and he held many offices including President in 1985. In 1978, the Academy named him Iowa Family Physician of the Year. Wayne served on the National Cancer Committee in 1977 and 1978 and also served on the Commission of Public Health and Scientific Affairs. Also a member of the Iowa Medical Society, Wayne served on numerous committees and also was a board member of the Iowa Medical Society Malpractice Insurance Program. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Boone Chamber of Commerce and their Ambassadors, the Boone Historical Society, the Boone DMACC Foundation, and served on the Boone DMACC Board of Directors. Wayne received an Honorary Phi Theta Kappa award. Wayne was a member of many other local organizations. He enjoyed golf and reading.
