Harold & Mary Goldthwaite Garvey Endowment

This scholarship was established with an endowed estate gift from Mary Goldthwaite Garvey and Harold Garvey. Mary Thayer Goldthwaite Garvey passed away at the age of 86 and was the retired editor and co-publisher of the Boone News Republican. She began her career in journalism in 1924, when she joined the News Republican staff as editor and associate publisher, working with her father, Stephen Grant Goldthwaite. Upon his death in 1946, Mary’s husband, Harold, assumed those duties. The Garveys retired in 1972 where they sold the paper. Mary was a lifelong resident of Boone and held positions in several civic and business organizations. In 1943, she became the first woman elected to the Board of Directors of the Iowa Daily Press Association. She was given an award as Master Editor-Publisher in 1966 and had also received awards from the Iowa Press Women’s Group. She has served for several years as the president of the Board of Directors of the Ericson Public Library and was also on the Board of the Mamie Dowd Eisenhower Birthplace Foundation. She had belonged to the Junior Monday Club, Boone City Zoning Commission, the Episcopal Church, DeShon chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and chapter DD of PEO.
